Košický tím je bohatý na majstrovské skúsenosti, no nechýbajú mu ani hráči, ktorí ešte napriek úspešným kariéram svoj hlad po titule neukojili. Jedným z nich je aj 31-ročný obranca Eduard Šedivý. Extraligové ľady brázdi už vyše desať rokov a hoci si zahral v predošlých dvoch sezónach v semifinále, boj o zlato ešte na vlastnej koži neokúsil.

„Veľmi po tom túžim. Som tu šiestu sezónu a s Košicami som ešte vo finále nebol. V šatni je skvelá partia a každý z nás túži po úspechu,“ zdôraznil Edo, podľa ktorého bola košická túžba evidentná aj z prístupu v predošlej sérii proti Nitre. „Hráči ako Mišo Chovan či Denis Paršin sa neúnavne hádzali do striel. Ak takto bojujú za tím aj najtechnickejší hráči, tak to svedčí o tímovom duchu. Bojujeme jeden za druhého a v šatni sa vytvorila výborná partia.“

Cesta do finále vedie cez Zemplín. Michalovce obsadili v základnej časti až ôsmu priečku, no v predkole play-off vyradili Trenčín a následne šokovali obhajcu majstrovského titulu z Bratislavy.

„V semifinále si nevyberiete. „Hrozili“ nám samé silné tímy a vyšlo to na Michalovce. Odohrali sme s nimi už šesť zápasov a obe strany sa tak poznajú veľmi dobre. Vieme, čo od nich možno čakať. Uvidíme, v akom rozpoložení budú po Slovane. Dokázali veľkú vec a musíme sa na nich pripraviť veľmi zodpovedne,“ uvedomuje si Šedivý. Rola favorita séria patrí pochopiteľne našim hokejistom, no „oceliari“ upozorňujú na potrebu pokory a rešpektu. „Dovolím si povedať, že tento rok je liga nesmierne vyrovnaná. Už v základnej časti sa bojovalo do posledného kola a Michalovce vyhrali z ôsmeho miesta dve play-off série. Je teda zbytočné hovoriť o favoritoch. Musíme jednoducho odovzdať naše maximum a potom to bude v poriadku.“

V súvislosti s tímom Dukly sa hovorí o výpadku zranených opôr ako sú Matúš Paločko, Peter Bjalončík či Kristaps Bazevics. 

„V každom tíme sú už teraz nejakí zranení. To bohužiaľ k záveru sezóny patrí a ani nám sa to nevyhlo. Pokiaľ to len kúsok ide, snaží sa každý nastúpiť aj napriek zraneniu. Nepochybujem o tom, že obe strany budú bojovať naplno a na nejaké boľačky sa hľadieť nebude,“ zamýšľa sa 31-ročný obranca, podľa ktorého by bolo veľkou chybou nechať sa učičíkať rečami o únave súpera. Iste, veď Zemplínčania majú v nohách o päť zápasov predkola viac a veľa síl ich stála aj séria proti Slovanu. Ako sa však hovorí, víťazstvá sú najlepšou regeneráciou a tím Dukly je po postupe do semifinále v eufórii. „Určite ich nepodceníme a nie je na to dôvod. Poznáme silu súpera. Majú tam Žitného, ktorý dokáže potiahnuť puk a má skvelú strelu, Buc so Sujom sú silní na puku. Galamboš vie prekvapiť kľučkou, skvelú techniku má Pereskokov. My ich poznáme prakticky všetkých a vieme, na čo sa máme pripraviť.“

Špecifickú príchuť sérii dodáva fakt, že obaja michalovskí brankári Stanislav Škorvánek i Andrej Košarišťan pôsobili v minulosti v Košiciach.

„Ich kvality samozrejme poznáme. Obaja sú výborní brankári, momentálne je všeobecne známa forma Škorviho. S našim trénerom brankárov Dušanom Strhárskym si o nich určite niečo povieme a urobíme všetko preto, aby sme našli recept na odkliatie michalovskej bránky. Každý má svoju slabinu a základom je tlačiť sa do bránky. Aj Nitran Kašík mal skvelú formu a dokázali sme sa presadiť,“ pousmial sa senický odchovanec v službách HC.

Michalovské prostredie pozná veľmi dobre, veď do Košíc sa v lete 2021 vrátil práve po zisku bronzu v drese Dukly. „Stále tam mám kamarátov, ale kamarátstva teraz pôjdu bokom. Myslím si, že rovnako to vnímajú aj Berty a Southy (Marek Bartánus a Jordon Southorn, pozn. red.), s ktorými sme vtedy spoločne bojovali za Michalovce. Teraz sme v Košiciach a pozeráme už len na seba. Malou výhodou možno je, že súpera poznáme veľmi dobre a osobne si dokážem predstaviť tú eufóriu, ktorá tam teraz vládne. Michalovce sú športové mesto a ak sa nemýlim, tak okrem Bratislavy majú len oni kluby v troch najvýznamnejších extraligových kolektívnych súťažiach. Ľudia tam športom žijú a sponzori podporujú šport. To je určite sympatické a bodaj by to takto fungovalo všade.“

Pravá hokejová nálada momentálne vládne aj v Košiciach. Záverečný zápas štvrťfinálovej série proti Nitre sledovalo v Steel aréne vyše 7200 divákov a všetko nasvedčuje tomu, že v semifinále pôjde toto číslo ešte nahor.

„Už naposledy bolo v hľadisku len málo voľných miest a osobne si myslím, že teraz už bude vypredané. Derby proti Michalovciam je určite lákavé a semifinále sa nehrá každý rok. Verím preto, že si to ľudia nenechajú ujsť,“ uzavrel Eduard Šedivý.

Šedivý will experience his third semi-finals in a row, longs for his first finals

Košice’s team is rich in championship experience, yet there are some players who, despite their successful careers, haven’t satiated their hunger for the title. One of them is also a 31-year-old defenseman Eduard Šedivý. He has been skating on the ice of Extraliga for more than 10 years, and although he had played in the semi-finals in the previous two seasons, he hasn’t experienced the battle for the gold just yet.

“I really yearn for this. This is my sixth season here and I still haven’t gotten to the finals with Košice. The locker room is full of great guys and every one of us longs for success,” emphasizes Edo, who thinks this desire of Košice was also evident from the approach to the previous series against Nitra. “Players like Michal Chovan or Denis Parshin were relentlessly blocking shots with their own bodies. If this is how even the most technical players fight for their team, it shows how strong the team spirit is. We fight for one another and a great group was formed in the locker room.”

The way to the finals goes through Zemplín. In the regular season, Michalovce occupied the eighth place, but they eliminated Trenčín in the playoff qualifications and proceeded to shock the defending champion from Bratislava.

“You don’t get to choose in the semi-finals. We were ‘threatened’ with a bunch of strong teams and in the end, it came down to Michalovce. We have played six games against them already, therefore both parties know each other well. We know what to expect. But we will see what state of mind they are in after Slovan. They accomplished a big thing and we have to prepare diligently,” realizes Šedivý. The role of the series favourite understandably belongs to our hockey players, however, the Steelers highlight the need for humility and respect. “Dare I say, the league is very balanced this year. In the regular season, teams fought right to the last round, and Michalovce, advancing from eighth place, won two playoff series. It is redundant then to talk about favourites. We simply have to give our maximum and everything will be all right.”

In connection with the Dukla team, there is talk of a loss of support, such as Matúš Paločko, Peter Bjalončík, or Kristaps Bazevics, due to injuries.

“There are injured in every team, now. Sadly, this is a part of the end of the season, and even we weren’t immune to it. If it is at least a little bit possible, every player tries to join the game, even though they are injured. I don’t doubt both sides will fight with all they have and these sores will be overlooked,” muses the 31-year-old defenseman who thinks it a big mistake to let themselves be lulled by the talk of the opponent being tired. Of course, the Dukla players have five more games in their legs from playoff qualifications and the Slovan series has been tiring as well. But as it goes, their wins are their best regeneration and the Dukla team is euphoric after the advancement to the semi-finals. “We surely won’t underestimate them, there is no reason for it. We know their strengths. They have Žitný who can protect the puck and is a great shot, Buc and Suja are strong with the puck. Galamboš knows to surprise with a trick. Pereskokov has an amazing technique. We basically know all of them and know what to prepare for.”

The fact that both goalies of Michalovce, Stanislav Škorvánek and Andrej Košarišťan, have played for Košice in the past adds a specific flavour to the series.

“Of course, we are familiar with their qualities. Both of them are great goalies, at the moment, the form of Škorvi is reputable. We’ll definitely chat about them with our own goalie coach Dušan Strhársky, and we will do everything to find a recipe to de-curse the Michalovce’s goal. Everyone has a weakness and the basis is to pressure the goal. Kašík from Nitra had great form as well and we were able to score despite that,” smiled the offspring of Senica in the service of HC.

He knows the Michalovce environment very well especially because it was just after getting bronze in the Dukla jersey in the summer of 2021 that he returned to Košice. “I still have friends there, but those friendships will be put aside. I assume Berty and Southy (Marek Bartánus and Jordon Southorn, ed. note) whom I’ve fought alongside for Michalovce then, think alike. Now that we are in Košice we only look at ourselves. Maybe a little advantage is our thorough knowledge of the opponent and, personally, I can imagine the euphoria that reigns there now. Michalovce is a sporty city and, if I’m not wrong, apart from Bratislava they are the only ones to have three clubs in the three highest Extraliga team competitions. People there live for the sport and sponsors support the sport. It is rather sympathetic and I only wish it could be like this everywhere.”

At the moment, real hockey mood prevails in Košice as well. The last game of the quarter-finals series was watched by more than 7 200 viewers in Steel Arena and everything points to a higher attendance in the semi-finals.

“There was only a little number of unoccupied seats the last time, and personally I think the stadium will sell out. Derby versus Michalovce is certainly attractive and one doesn’t get to experience the semi-finals every year. Because of that, I’m sure people won’t let this chance pass,” closes out Eduard Šedivý.
